The Ring

It’s almost Halloween — my favorite holiday! The other week some friends and I decided to re-watch The Ring after not having seen it in two decades. We were fully prepared to be scared shitless so we arranged to do a double feature. First up: The Ring, so we can thoroughly freak ourselves out. Then comes the palate cleanser: Kiki’s Delivery Service. It’s got a witch in it (Halloween appropriate), but Kiki’s biggest threat is that she has no control of her broom as she zips around making deliveries in a quaint, vaguely European-looking town.

Anyways, it turns out we didn’t need Kiki after all. The Ring is, indeed, twenty years old, which means that it’s really not that scary anymore. You watch a spooky video tape, then get a weird phone call on your landline, then die a week later. Turns out those plot points don’t hit the same in 2023.

But that doesn’t mean that this video of an ingenious cosplay Ring costume that surfaced on my Instagram wasn’t the best thing I saw on the internet this week.
