World Wide Whack
I know, I know. Beyoncé released Cowboy Carter this past Friday, and while, don’t get me wrong, it’s a great album which has been on heavy rotation in my apartment for the past four days, I have to admit that it hasn’t taken me in the same way that Tierra Whack’s debut album World Wide Whack has me completely obsessed.
The beats are oh-so-catchy and the lyrics are dark and heavy in ways that I love. Maybe I’m depressed, I don’t know, but her lyrics are hitting me in ways that Beyoncé’s just aren’t. The exception, of course, is the brilliantly upbeat “Shower Song” which has been stuck in my head on repeat, in the off moments when I’m not crooning “suiiiiiciiiiiiiiiiiide” while listening to “27 Club.” I highly recommend checking out the videos for both of these songs, while you’re at it. They’re dreamy and a little demented.
I don’t know, guys. I say we get more excited about Tierra Whack and stop acting like Beyoncé is the first Black person to make country music. I just feel like Tierra’s pushing some boundaries here and I’m pumped to see where she takes us. Or if you want to celebrate both ladies at once, let’s all take some time to remember how much of a banger “My Power” is.
